What Re-emerging From Lockdown Means for Your Home Security

Most of us are now looking forward to exiting lockdown and returning to some kind of routine, or schedule, that we were once used to. However, with the return to school, work and travel brings its own issues and leaving the home unoccupied is a huge concern to most property owners.

We’ve put together some tips on doing what you can to help deter criminals from entering your home.

  • Financial loss can be substantially reduced or avoided altogether by installing a security system that works to prevent home invasions so they truly do make a great investment.
  • Make sure the front of the house, and front and back gardens and driveways are visible with good lighting.
  • Motion sensors for both lighting and CCTV activation are a good idea and they alert you when there’s movement around your home.
  • Keep bushes trimmed and tidy so there are no restrictions to your view of suspicious activity.
  • Also ensure that grass and weeds are cut back and get someone to do this for you if you’re planning an extended trip away.
  • Some of us do this anyway to keep pets calm but it does work to deter burglaries and is such a simple thing to do – leave music or the TV on while you’re out. Remote security systems allow you to switch on and off lights and music or TV when you want to.
  • Monitored alarms will alert you or the surveillance company if unusual activity is detected. With ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) guidelines they can inform the police but do make sure you invest in an alarm from a reputable company that won’t be over-sensitive as levels of attendance by a police force can be reduced and removed if an alarm is faulty and they’re getting called out too often.
  • Check your CCTV footage regularly and note any unusual activity around your property. This doesn’t have to take hours and hours but by getting into the habit as you could be helping prevent a home invasion at your home or at your neighbours homes. As well as having alarm systems around the property you can have more eyes and ears paying further attention to activity in your area.
  • Making sure trusted neighbours know you are going away is an option for most of us although just relying on neighbours who may also be out of their home frequently is okay but not the only choice.
