Clocks Going Back: Is Your CCTV Ready for Darker Evenings?

On Sunday 25 October the clocks go back, and in Galway that means darkness arriving well before the end of the working day. Now is a good time of year to check that your CCTV will do its job when the light fades.

Why night performance matters

Most people think of CCTV as a daytime tool, but a camera that gives a sharp picture at noon and a grainy one at six o’clock isn’t giving you much protection. The evenings and early mornings are when you most need clear footage.

A quick pre-winter check

  • Look at your footage after dark. Review a few minutes of recent night-time recordings. Can you make out faces, vehicles and movement, or is everything washed out or murky?
  • Clean the lenses. Dust, cobwebs and autumn damp build up on camera domes. A gentle wipe can make a surprising difference, especially with infrared night vision.
  • Check for glare. Reflections from security lights, windows or wet surfaces can bounce back into the lens. Sometimes a small adjustment to the angle fixes it.
  • Trim back foliage. Branches that were harmless in summer can block a camera’s view, or trigger false alerts when they move in the wind.
  • Test your lighting. Cameras and lighting work as a team. A blown bulb or a faulty sensor light can leave a blind spot you didn’t know about.
  • Confirm your recording is working. Check that your recorder is saving footage, the time and date are correct, and there’s enough storage for your retention period.

When it’s time to upgrade

If footage is poor even after a clean and adjustment, the cameras themselves may be the issue. Older models often struggle in low light, whereas modern cameras with better sensors and colour night vision give much clearer images in dim conditions.

Not only for businesses

Homeowners benefit from this too. With darker evenings, many people are coming home or leaving the house in the dark, and good CCTV with lighting at the front door brings real peace of mind.
